Club History

The Footscray Angling Club was formed in 1900.  It was the first club to liberate trout in the Maribyrnong River, otherwise known as the Deep creek from the ford at Braybrook.  The disbandment of this club is not known.

The present day angling club was formed in 1926, the first meeting took place on the top floor of the Ariell Bike shop in Nicholson St. From there the club moved to the following four places, rooms at the Trocodera Cafe, Whitehall St, the Station Hotel, then to Paisley St.  In 1932 the club then purchased a property in Leeds St which was then converted by members into a hall.  This hall was sold and the members then shifted to the Footscray Football Social Club, Buckingham Hotel, Footscray Institute of Technology and the Footscray Boat Club.  Membership at one stage was over 200 members but numbers declined when most families started to own their own cars.

In 1996 the club took over the Yarraville Angling Club Hall located at 70 Pentland Parade in Seddon after that club was disbanded.  Today the Footscray Angling Club is still located at Pentland Parade.

ANGLING

Apart from our own club competitions the Footscray Angling Club has annual inter-club competitions against the Albert Park Angling Club and the Brunswick City Angling Club.

The club also participates annually in the ‘Finclips’ program run by the Snobs Creek Hatchery.  The club is also a regular entrant in the annual Metropolitan Anglers Association’s Jesson Shield Competition.

For the past 2 years the club has held a very successful “Come & Try” day for the disabled. This is held on the banks of the Maribrynong River.
